Ah, yes. The ‘illuminations’…

Cue everyone’s favourite Christmas game – hunt the (infuriatingly elusive) spare bulb.

Quite why/how it is that a perfectly functional set of tree lights, stored with painstaking care in the dark recesses of a loft/under-the-stairs-cupboard/comparable undisturbed cubby hole, will – unfailingly – develop a catastrophic fault during its year’s hibernation (precipitating consternation and general tumult), will doubtless remain an unfathomable mystery. But one without which the ritual of festive decorating would be woefully incomplete – and unseasonably calm. (Plus, Christmas electricals-related strife remains one of my most reliable and oft-deployed justifications for cracking open the Sloe Gin – or, at the very least, a generously-brandy-laced mince pie…)
